Trinity Baseball Tops Colby 11-2

Hartford, Conn. - Junior P Jeremiah Bayer (Greenfield, Mass.) struck out nine batters, walked none, and allowed just one unearned run in eight innings of work to lead the Trinity College Bantams over the visiting Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 7 the nation, improves to 19-3 overall and 10-0 in the division after winning the first of a three-game series this weekend with Colby. The Mules fall to 5-15 overall and 1-6 in the NESCAC East. Tomorrow's doubleheader has been moved up from noon to 11 a.m.
Colby jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning after sophomore John Lerner (Canton, Mass.) scored on an infield single and junior Ken Kaufman (Lexington, Mass.) crossed the plate on an error. The Bantams were silenced by pitcher Matt Moore (Winfield, Ill.) for the first three innings, before scoring three times in the fourth on a two passed balls, four walks, and a Colby error.
Trinity relied on power to break the game open, as junior OF Matt Sullivan (North Reading, Mass.) connecting for a solo home run, and senior co-captain 2B Ryan Piacentini (Portland, Maine) blasted a grand slam down the left field line later in the inning to cap a six-run sixth.
Moore allowed eight runs and walked eight batters, but allowed just four earned runs in seven innings. Trinity freshman pitcher James Ramsey (Belmont, Mass.) pitched the ninth, allowing one walk and striking out two to close the game. Sophomore Jack Abbott (Longmeadow, Mass.) reached base four times in the game, while junior 1B Kent Graham (Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior James Wood (Windham, N.H.) each doubled for the Bantams.
