Trinity And Bates Split Baseball Doubleheader
Hartford, Conn. – Freshman RHP Sean Meekins (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) won his sixth straight decision without a loss on the mound and fellow rookie Brian Wolfe (La Habra, Calif.) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Bates College Bobcats in the first game of a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball doubleheader this afternoon. Bates outlasted the Bantams with three runs in the top of the 13th inning to take an 8-5 triumph in game two. Trinity, ranked No. 3 in New England, moves to 23-8 overall and closes its NESCAC East Division slate with a first-place 10-2 mark. Bates is now 16-15 overall and 2-7 in the division, having also lost in yesterday's series opener, 3-1, to the Bantams in Hartford.
Meekins allowed five hits and one run with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings to improve to 6-0, while junior RHP Ben Goldberg (Plainview, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless seventh frame for his fifth save. Bates sophomore LHP Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser with a four-hitter that included three K's and no walks. The Bobcats broke a scoreless tie on an RBI single by sophomore Griffin Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) in the top of the fifth inning, but the Bantams returned the favor in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI hit by freshman 3B Adam Moossmann (East Northport, N.Y.). Trinity junior OF Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) led off the bottom of the sixth frame with a double, and scored on Wolfe's game-winning, two-out double two-out double.
Bates junior Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) walked to lead off the 13th inning of the nightcap, after falling behind in the count 0-and-2, and classmate Kevin Davis (Andover, Mass.) drove him in for the clinching run with a single to center field. Senior captain Mike Cummei (Acton, Mass.) and Tewksbury added RBI singles later in the inning to give Bates a three-run cushion, and junior RHP Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) completed an 11-out relief win by striking out the side in the bottom of the inning. Antonelli, who did not allow a run despite pitching in two separate innings where the bases were loaded, and sophomore lefty Brad Reynolds (Louisville, Colo.) combined to toss 9.1 innings and allow four hits and one run with eight K's for the Bobcats. Four Trinity relievers were nearly equal to the task, led by sophomore Peter Burrows (Floral Park, N.Y.) who had not yielded a run and had given up just three hits with three strikeouts in eight innings out of the bullpen before walking Sonberg to start the game's final inning.
Trailing, 5-4, Trinity had tied the game in the eighth inning on a two-out, infield hit off Reynolds' glove by senior CF David Casanova (Bristol, Conn.) that scored junior C Luke Auger (Avon, Conn.) from third. Casanova finished 3-for-5 with a stolen base in game two, while Wolfe was 2-for-4. Davis and Ciummei each had four hits for Bates, while sophomore Steve Burke (Bedford, N.H.) had two hits and scored four times.
