Trinity Baseball Sweeps Worcester State With Two Shutouts
Auburndale, Fla. - Behind a pair of dominant pitching performances by freshman southpaw Robert Gau (Westport, Conn.) and junior righthander Ben Goldberg (Plainfield, N.Y.), the Trinity College Bantams defeated the Worcester State University Lancers, 4-0, and, 6-0, this afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex. Trinity evens its record at 3-3, while the Lancers drop to 2-6.
In his first career start, Gau hurled a three-hitter as not one ball left the infield. Gau fanned ten men and retired the remaining 11 on the ground. The Bantams got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a two-run single by junior Stephen Howard (Cheshire, Conn.). Trinity crossed the plate in the fourth on an RBI double by senior OF David Casanova (Bristol, Conn.) and a fielder’s choice by Howard in the sixth.
Trinity started off the second game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases juiced and no one out, senior 1B Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.), junior Joe Papa (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman Scott Hurley (Greenwich, Conn.) each manufactured run-producing at-bats. The Bantams had one man on in every inning while they scored in the second, fifth and sixth innings. Mortimer highlighted the offense with a solo homer to right in the fifth frame. Goldberg yielded just three Lancer base knocks. He struck out a trio of batters and issued two free passes.
