Hartford, Conn. – Senior captain Joe Papa (Stoneham, Mass.) singled and scored the game-winning run on an error to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 8-6 win in extra innings over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action this afternoon. Trinity, which lost the nightcap in today's doubleheader, 4-1, moves to 10-8 overall and 2-1 in the division, while the Polar Bears are now 9-8 overall and 1-2 in the league. Trinity won the series opener yesterday, 8-2, as all three games moved to Trinity due to unplayable field conditions at Bowdoin. Bowdoin served as the "home" team in all three games of the series.
Trinity scored in the first inning on a single by senior captain OF Michael Rueger (Teaneck, N.J.) and an RBI double by senior captain SS Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.), and again in the third and fourth frames on RBI singles by Rogers and senior OF Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.), respectively. Bowdoin got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but the Bantams answered in the top of the fifth with a run-scoring double by sophomore OF Scott Huley (Greenwich, Conn.) and an RBI single by sophomore IF Kyle Decker (Simsbury, Conn.).
Trinity went ahead, 6-1, in the top of the sixth inning on a solo homer by Papa, but the Polar Bears scored five runs in the next two innings to tie the game at 6-6. Polar Bear junior Duncan Taylor Washington, D.C.) doubled and sophomore Erik Jacobson (Milton, Mass.) singled in the sixth inning and scored on an error and a wild pitch, respectively. Senior captain Tim McGarry (Kennett Square, Pa.) led off the seventh with a double and scored on a single by sophomore IF Scott Canales (Saco, Maine). Taylor singled home Canales and went on to force the extra-inning in a seven-inning scheduled game by scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jacobson.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Papa singled and scored all the way from first base on an error. First-year C Scott Cullinane (East Greenwich, R.I.) later drove home Huley for an insurance run with a two-out hit, and Trinity junior RHP Paul Carbone (North Wales, Pa.) saved the game for senior captain Ben Goldberg (Plainview, N.Y.) with a scoreless bottom of the eighth. Papa and Decker were both 3-for-4 for the Bantam offense, while Papa also scored three times, and Rogers, Huley, and Cullinane had two hits apiece. McGarry finished 4-for-5 and Taylor was 3-for-4 for the Polar Bears. Bantam sophomore starter Peter Burrows (Floral Park, N.Y.) went 5.1 innings and allowed seven hits and one earned run with three K's. Rookie Harry Ridge (Yarmouth, Maine took the loss in relief for Bowdoin.
In the second game, Bowdoin LHP Christian Martin (Lake Bluff, Ill.) went the distance in another seven-inning affair, yielding eight hits and one run with nine K's and no walks. Almeida was 3-for-4 and Cullinane went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Bantam rookie righty John Meuchner (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) took the loss despite allowing a single hit over 5.2 innings of work. Bowdoin scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as McGarry delivered a two-run double after an HBP and a walk for the lone Polar Bear hit. McGarry later scored on a double steal, and the Polar Bears added an insurance run in the sixth frame on a walk, a bunt, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly by Jacobson.
