Senior co-captain LHP Chris Speer (Westport, Conn.) and rookie hurlers Colby Fortin (Bow, N.H.) and Alex Herbst (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) gave the Bantams a chance with 5.1 combined innings of scoreless pitching in the middle innings, but the Owls broke through with an insurance run in the eighth.

Both teams scored on an unearned run in the fourth stanza, as Trinity first-year C Alex Rodriguez (South Windsor, Conn.) singled in a run and scored a second and junior Cooper Mooney (Southbury, Conn.) and sophomore Ben Reinisch (Troy, N.Y.) also drove in runs in the inning. Senior Nick DiBenedetto (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Mooney both reached third for Trinity but did not score, and Westfield State scored its last run on a wild pitch.
Trinity first-year Matt Koperniak (Adams, Mass.) had two hits, a run, and a double, while Colin Dunn was 3-for-6 and scored twice for the Owls. Bantam sophomore starter Rich Cardillo (Boston, Mass.) was saddled with the loss, and John Gegetskas went 5.1 innings on the bump to improve to 2-0 for Westfield State.
