Trinity Football's Brito Continues To Collect Prestigious Academic Awards
Five Bantams Collect Academic Honors For Bantams On The Gridiron
Hartford, Conn. - Trinity College football senior co-captain DE Herman Brito (Wayland, Mass.) has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American Division III Football Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Brito was also Capital One Academic All-District First Team honoree, and a finalist for one of the 2011 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar Athlete Awards. In the spring, Brito earned a Trinity Athletics Bartlett Award for his athletic success and his commitment tod campus and community service, and received a Trustee Award from the College at graduation for student excellence.
Selected as the best and brightest from the college gridiron, the 127 candidates for the 2011 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments®, a leading provider of not-for-profit workplace retirement savings plans in higher education, also comprise the list of semifinalists for the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation. Brito was recently selected to be featured by the NFF on its web site as National Scholar Athlete Of The Day. In addition, Brito, senior TE Allen Even (Wethersfield, Conn.), senior NT Tom Finnucan (Orange, Conn.), junior QB Ryan McGuirl (Basking Ridge, N.J.), and junior OL Tom O'Brien (White Plains, N.Y.) were named to the 2011 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Fall All-Academic Team, and Brito, Even, Finnucan, senior Dl Matt Delconte (Berlin, Conn.), senior co-captain ILB Walter Fallas (Everett, Mass.), and senior LB Mark Snyder (Rockaway, N.J.) graced the NFF Hampshire Society.
Brito is a two-time Academic All-District and NESCAC Fall All-Academic selection, and a two-time All-NESCAC Second Team selection on the defensive line. He helped Trinity to a 7-1 record in 2011 and finished the year with 37 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. Brito earned a Lambert Scholarship as the top intern in the Massachusetts State legislature in 2010. A graduate of Wayland High School, Brito is majoring in public policy & law at Trinity. He is the son of Maria and Herman Brito.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
"This year's candidates truly embody the National Football Foundation's mission of building leaders through football," said NFF Chairman Archie Manning whose sons Peyton (1997 Campbell Trophy winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. "They are standouts in the classroom and on the field and have become leaders in their respective communities. Each school should take great pride in being represented by such well-rounded young men who will undoubtedly go on to do great things in life."
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
The NESCAC Fall All-Academic selections today with 614 student-athletes earning recognition. To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. A transfer student must have completed one year of study at the institution. Of the 614 student-athletes that earned Fall All-Academic, 291 individuals received recognition for the second-straight year. In addition, 65 players garnered both All-Academic and All-Conference accolades and a total of 48 individuals received All-Sportsmanship and All-Academic. The 2012 NFF Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 g.p.a or better throughout their college career. A total of 728 players from 233 schools qualified for membership in the society's sixth year, marking this year's class as the largest since the program's creation in 2007.
