Trinity Field Hockey Scores Two Quick Goals After Half To Beat Wellesley
Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College Bantams scored twice in less than three minutes early in the second half to edge the visiting Wellesley College Blue, 2-1, in field hockey action this evening in a steady downpour on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 16 in the nation, improves to 8-1 with its third straight win, while the Blue lose their second in a row to drop to 7-4.
Trailing, 1-0, at the break after Wellesley sophomore Nathalie Gruet (Acton, Mass.) scored from freshman midfielder Hannah Flesch (Rockville, Md.) 17:11 into the game on a penalty corner for the only goal of the first half, Bantam rookie forward Olivia Tapsall (Old Greenwich, Conn.) netted in a rebound off her own initial shot 4:33 into the second stanza to tie the game. Trinity junior defender Sarah Duncan (Dedham, Mass.) fed senior co-captain midfielder Haley Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) on the clinching goal just 2:52 later off a Bantam penalty corner, while the Trinity defense of Duncan, junior Lyndsey Shepard (Hamilton, Mass.) and sophomore Sophie Doering (Darien, Conn.) held the Blue without a shot for the final 49:35 of the game.
Trinity junior goalie Anne Marie Scalambrino (Chicago, Ill.) made one save, while Wellesley junior backstop Brit Mscisz (Topsfield, Mass.) stopped 12 shots including one against Bantam first-year Nikki Rivera (Rockaway, N.J.) on a one-on-one chance for the Bantams to tie the score in the first half. Trinity outshot the Blue, 24-3, for the game and 14-0 in the second half and held a 12-3 edge on penalty corners. Wellesley Head Coach Julia King was an assistant to Trinity Head Coach Anne Parmenter, who netted her 100th victory with the Bantams in a 1-0 overtime win at No. 14-ranked Amherst on Tuesday, in 2009 and 2010.
