North Dartmouth, Mass. - Senior tri-captain back Sarah Duncan (Dedham, Mass.) scored the game's only goal on a penalty stroke in the second half to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a season-opening, 1-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs in field hockey action this evening on Cressy Field. The game, which opened the 2013-14 sports season for Trinity and was the first Corsair field hockey game of the fall, gives the Bantams seven wins against Mass.-Dartmouth in as many years.
The first 50 minutes featured had very little offense until Bantam sophomore forward Nikki Rivera (Rockaway, N.J.) was tripped on a breakaway with 9:02 remaining in the game, and Duncan converted the stroke. Duncan also combined with fellow senior tri-captain Lyndsey Shepard (Hamilton, Mass.) and juniors Sophie Doering (Darien, Conn.) and Courtney Wynne (Darien, Conn.) to hold the Corsairs without a shot in the game.
Corsair senior goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, Mass.) made eight saves, and senior tri-captain Anne Marie Scalambrino (Chicago, Ill.) earned the shutout in Trinity's cage without making a save.
