Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore Caroline Curtin (Andover, Mass.) scored 43 seconds into overtime to lift the Trinity College Bantams to a dramatic, 3-2, victory over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears on Saturday in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey action at Sheppard Field in Hartford. Trinity improves to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in conference play while Bowdoin falls to 6-3 on the year and 3-3 in league play. The Bantams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Springfield College for a 6 p.m. game.

Curtin's goal gave Trinity the win in a back-and-forth game that saw four combined second half goals after a scoreless first half. Senior goalie Lori Berger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) made five saves in the victory while her counterpart, Bowdoin goaltender Maddie Ferrucci (Essex, Conn.), also finished with five stops.

Both defenses played strong in the first half, limiting the scoring chances. Trinity won the shot battle, 5-2, while both teams earned a pair of corners in the first 35 minutes of action. Bowdoin had a good chance at scoring with 13 minutes left to go when Elizabeth Bennewitz (Westport, Conn.) controlled a loose ball near midfield and streaked towards the box with space, but her shot misfired wide right without incident. The Bantams had a good look on their second corner of the half but Ferrucci came up with a pair of saves on shots by Curtin and Kendall Brown (Greenwich, Conn.).

Bowdoin broke the tie when Elle Brine (Hanover, N.H.) stuffed a loose ball into the back of the box after a scrum on a corner. Brine inserted it which led to a shot from Bennewitz but Trinity junior Madison Guiffre (Wellesley, Mass.) came up with a defensive save to stop the initial shot. The ball then bounced to Brine who was near the backside post where she scored.

Trinity nearly responded just a few minutes later but Ferrucci came up with another clutch save. Senior co-captain Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) sent a pass to junior Chandler Solimine (Pelham, N.Y.) at the front of Bowdoin's cage, but Solimine's shot was kicked aside by Ferrucci to preserve the one-goal lead for the time being. At the 51:26 mark, Finn evened the score for Trinity off a penalty corner. Sophomore Nicole Quinlan (Duxbury, Mass.) inserted the ball to Curtin who set it for Finn, who lifted a shot over everyone but just below the top crossbar for her 10th goal of the season.

Trinity took a 2-1 lead with 5:50 remaining when Solimine scored in a nearly identical fashion as Finn's first goal off a corner. Quinlan inserted it to Curtin who set it for Solimine who sailed a shot over the head of Ferrucci and into the back of the box. Just 21 seconds later though, Bowdoin tied things at 2-2 when Abby Bashaw (West Newbury, Mass.) raced down the field and beat Berger.

Neither side could break the tie in the waning minutes of regulation, sending the game to the extra session. 32 seconds in, Trinity earned a corner which led to Curtin's goal. Junior Alison Slowe (Medfield, Mass.) inserted the corner and after a scrum in front of the net, Curtin cleaned up the loose ball and put it into the back of the box to win it.
