Trinity Men’s Basketball Wins 26th Annual Harbor Invitational Tournament
BOSTON, Mass. – A balanced attack helped the Trinity College men's basketball team defeat Framingham State University, 61-45, to capture the 26th Annual UMass Boston Harbor Invitational this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Massachusetts, Boston. The Bantams improve to 4-1 overall with their second tournament win in as many weekends, while the Rams fall to 2-3 on the season.
Trinity came out of the gate strong, opening the game on a 5-0 spurt, capped by a three-pointer from senior guard Brian Ford (Bronx, N.Y.), 1:35 into the game. The Rams answered with a 6-2 run of their own, but Trinity responded by scoring the game's next seven points to take a 14-6 lead with 11:15 remaining in the first half. A three-pointer by Framingham State senior guard Royce Veal (Dorchester, Mass.) cut the lead to seven, at 22-15 with 4:26 remaining in the session, but the Bantams would roll off another 7-0 run to close the frame, fueled by two layups by junior center Chris Applegate (High Point, N.C.) to extend the Bantam lead to 29-15, heading into the halftime intermission.
Over the first ten minutes of action in the second half, Framingham State was able to chip away at the deficit to make it a five point game, after a jumper by freshman guard Darius Carter (Boston, Mass.) made it 34-29 in favor of the Bantams. Trinity would respond with a 9-0 run, getting five points from senior forward Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and four from Ford to match the halftime margin of 14 points, at 43-29, with nine minutes to play. A basket and free throw by Framingham junior guard Allen Saint-Surin (Brockton, Mass.) cut the lead to 11 points (43-32) on the following possession, but the Bantams would pull away from there, sealing the win and the tournament title.
Four Trinity players scored in double figures, led by MacDougall's game-high of 16 points on 7-14 shooting from the floor, while sophomore guard Cameron Sutton (Queens, N.Y.) scored 11 points on 4-5 shooting. Ford and Applegate each contributed 10 points, and Applegate also recorded a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Applegate was named the Harbor Invitational's Most Valuable Player, while Sutton was selected to the All-Tournament team.
