Albertus Magnus Men's Basketball Wins At Trinity
Hartford, Conn. – Senior forward Ray Askew (Hamden, Conn.) had 31 points, making 11 out of 14 shots from the foul line, and added seven rebounds to lead the visiting Albertus Magnus College Falcons to an 85-73 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in men's basketball action this afternoon on Ogrodnik Court in Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity falls to 10-12 with its seventh setback in a row, while No. 24-ranked Albertus Magnus improves to 21-1 with its 16th consecutive victory.
The visitors scored the first five points of the game and led, 29-18, with 6:43 left in the first half after a pair of free throws by junior center Jefferson Lora (Bronx, N.Y.), but Trinity used a 13-1 run to take its first lead of the game at 31-30 at the 4:21 mark on a jumper by freshman forward Mickel Simpson (Woburn, Mass.). The Falcons scored the last four points of the half, including a put-back as the buzzer sounded to take a 45-40 lead into the break.
After falling behind by double digits again in the second half, Trinity closed to within four points at 67-63 at the 8:28 mark after a two-point jumper and a three-pointer by rookie guard Varun Ram (Clarkville, Md.). A steal and layup by Simpson made the score, 75-50, in the Falcons' favor with 3:36 left in the game, but Albertus held Trinity scoreless for the next 2:47 of the game and shot 6-for-6 down the stretch to preserve the win.
Sophomore forward Eric Dean (Gilford, N.H.) paced Trinity with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots, while junior guard Mick DiStasio (Yarmouth, Maine) added 14 points, four rebounds, a game-high five assists, two blocks, and three steals, and rookie center George Papadeas (Athens, Greece) contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds off the Trinity bench. Falcon junior guard Arshad Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) had 17 points, three assists, and three steals, and Lora finished with 10 points and a team-high 10 boards.
