Trinity Golf Team Takes Another Shot At First NESCAC Title This Weekend In Vermont

Hartford, Conn., April 23, 2009 -  The Trinity College golf team, coached by Bill Detrick, will compete for its first New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship title in the 2009 league tournament this weekend at Middlebury College's Ralph Myhre Golf Course.  The two-day, 36-hole qualifying event will feature the top four teams from the NESCAC Qualifying Tournament during the fall season. The first group will tee off on Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m., and the qualifier will conclude on Sunday, April 26 beginning at 10 a.m.

Trinity, the host Middlebury Panthers, Williams College, and Hamilton College advanced to the championship round with a top-four finishes at the NESCAC Qualifier, which was also played at Middlebury.  In 2007-08, Trinity won the fall tournament, hosted the spring tournament at Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Berlin, Conn., and finished fourth overall.  Trinity also tied Middlebury for first place in the 2006-07 NESCAC Championship Tournament, but the Panthers were awarded the league crown due to tiebreaking rules.  The Bantams boast the last three NESCAC Individual Champions, as junior co-captain Reid Longley (Atlanta, Ga.) took that honor both this fall and as a rookie in 2006 and classmate Josh Grossman (Great Neck, N.Y.) earned the award with a first-place, two-round score of 146 in 2007.

Longley finished first overall in the fall qualifier with a two-round score of 141 to lead Trinity to second place.  Longley shot a 70 on the first day and a 71 on Sunday to finish one stroke ahead of Hamilton College's Jeff Corbett in the fall qualifier.  The Bantams shot a 294 as a team on Saturday and a 300 today to finish at 594 for the tournament, while the host Middlebury College Panthers recorded a 292 on Saturday and a 301 today to win the event at 593.  Bantam sophomore Jay Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) finished as one of several players tied for fifth overall with a two-round score of 150, while senior co-captain Josh Biren (Sudbury, Mass.) shot a 153, freshman Alex Bermingham (Bedford, N.Y.) shot a 154, and senior Alec MacColl (Centennial, Colo.) recorded a 155.
