Trinity Golf's Bermingham, Driscoll, And LongleyEarn Post-Season Awards
Hartford, Conn., June 19, 2009 – Trinity College freshman Alex Bermingham (Bedford, N.Y.) was selected as the lone representative from the East Region to the 2009 Golf Coaches (GCAA) National All-Freshman Team, while junior co-captain Reid Longley (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Jay Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) were each selected for the Ping Division III All-Regional Teams as selected by the GCAA. Longley was also named as Trinity golf's representative on the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Trinity golf squad, coached by Bill Detrick (18th Season), finished tied for first with Middlebury in the NESCAC Championship Tournament but the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament was awarded to Middlebury due to tiebreaking rules. The Bantam won four other tournaments outright, repeating as Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Champions and winning the Trinity Shootout, the Muhlenberg Invitational, and the Hampton Inn Invitational in North Dartmouth, Mass.
Bermingham recorded a season-best, two-round score of 146 in a fifth-place finish in the ECAC Tournament, and earned a season-best finish of second place at the Hampton Inn Invitational in North Dartmouth, Mass. He shot his best round of the season twice with a 71 in both the Duke Nelson Invitational at Middlebury and the ECAC Tournament. Bermingham is a graduate of the Taft School in Connecticut.
During the fall season, Longley was named the NESCAC Player of the Year for the second time in his career, after claiming league player and rookie of the year accolades in 2006. Longley finished atop the field at the 2008-09 NESCAC Golf Championship Qualifier with a career-best, two-day total of 141 to become the fourth-straight Trinity linksman to receive NESCAC Player of the Year honors and also earn his third consecutive All-NESCAC First Team selection. Longley also finished atop the individual standings this spring at a tri-match against national powers Oglethorpe and Rhodes and in the NESCAC Championship Tournament at Middlebury, while tying Driscoll for second-place in the Muhlenberg Invitational to close the fall campaign. Also a graduate of Taft, he is the son of Candace and William Longley.
Driscoll, who joined Longley as an All-NESCAC First Teamer in the fall, recorded the team’s best single round of the year with a 68 in the ECAC Championship Tournament and the team’s best two-round score of 140 (also career-low) in first-place finishes at both the ECAC Tourney and the Trinity College Shootout. Driscoll, who tied Longley again for second place in the Muhlenberg Invitational, is a graduate of Boston College High School. He is the son of Tracy and Brian Driscoll.
