Burns Highlights List Of Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Academic Award Winners


Hartford, Conn., July 30, 2009 - Trinity College men's ice hockey senior William Burns (Livonia, Mich.) graced the 2009 ESPN The Magazine At-Large Academic All-District First Team and the 2009 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Academic Team.  Bantam senior Chris Powers (Lynnfield, Mass.) and juniors Naota Hamashima (Tokyo, Japan) and Joseph Hanson (Weymouth, Mass.) joined Burns on the 2009 NESCAC All-Academic squad.  Burns is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and NESCAC All-Academic selections.  Each student-athlete voted to the ESPN The Magazine All-District Team must maintain at least a 3.20 g.p.a. and each NESCAC All-Academic honoree must be varsity letterwinner and maintain at least a 3.35 grade-point average.

The Trinity men's ice hockey team, under Head Coach David Cataruzolo (2nd Season), finished the 2008-09 season with a record of 16-9 overall record and 12-7 mark in the NESCAC.  The 2008 NESCAC Champion Bantams won the first-ever, men's post-season game at the Koeppel Community Sports Center, 3-1, against Connecticut College in the NESCAC Quarterfinals, but lost their bid for a second straight league crown with a 3-0 loss at Amherst in the semifinals. 

Burns, a defenseman, had three goals and three assists for six points while playing in all 29 games and anchoring a defense that limited opponents to 2.47 goals per game. In his career, Burns notched three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 78 games.  An alum of Detroit Central Catholic High School, Burns graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in chemistry and economics. He is the son of Colleen and Bill Burns.

Powers had seven goals and eight assists for 15 points with a team-high four power-play goals and one gamewinner while playing in all 22 games as a forward. A versatile player who saw time at forward and on defense in his career, Powers finished with 25 goals and 34 helpers for 59 points in 100 games.  An alum of Northfield-Mount Hermon School, Powers graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in economics. He is the son of Christy and John Powers.

Hamashima had three goals and five assists for eight points with one game-winning goal while playing in all 25 games as a forward.  A transfer to Trinity in 2006, Hamashima had 16 goals and 15 assists in 68 games the last three seasons.  An alum of Williston-Northampton School, Hamashima graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in engineering and has elected to end his Bantam career to attend graduate school. He is the son of Akito and Tomi Hamashima.

Hanson totaled 111 saves for a .910 save percentage and allowed 10 goals for a 2.40 GAA with a 3-2 record in five games and 250 minutes between the pipes as Trinity's primary backup goaltender.  A graduate of Middlesex School, Hanson is majoring in economics and political science at Trinity.  He is the son of Mary and Ken Hanson.
