Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Scores Six In The Third To Down Southern Maine

Hartford, Conn. - Senior co-captain forward Ryan Masucci (Winthrop, Mass.) totaled a goal and two assists, including a helper on the game-winner in the third period, and sophomore Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, Mass.) totaled 38 saves in goal to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 7-2 win over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)/Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East men's ice hockey action this evening at Williams Rink.  The Bantams improve to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC with their fourth consecutive victory, while the Huskies drop to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the ECAC East.

After a scoreless first period and goals by each team 28 seconds apart early in the second frame, Southern Maine appeared to gain momentum with a go-ahead goal on a wrist shot from the right wing by sophomore defenseman Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) that caromed off Vesprini's pad and into the net with 4:07 left before the break.  The tables turned on the Huskies after a five-minute major and game misconduct late in the second and two more Husky infractions early in the final stanza, as Trinity rattled off three power-play goals in less than two minutes to take a 4-2 lead 3:50 into the third period.  Bantam freshman forward Sean McCarthy (Duxbury, Mass.) got his stick on a wrist shot by classmate Michael DeMayo (Seaford, N.Y.) and redirected the puck past Southern Maine starting goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) to tie the score at 2-2 2:11 into the third period, while sophomore forward Egor Petrov (Novokuznetsk, Russia) and Masucci lit the lamp 42 seconds apart to put the Bantams ahead by a pair 3:50 into the third.  Trinity added to its cushion three more times before the horn sounded.

Seven different Bantams scored goals, including Petrov, senior co-captain defenseman Chris Diozzi (Belmont, Mass.), and senior forward Riley Hicks (Calgary, Alberta) who each added an assist.  Junior forward Chris Travis (Scituate, Mass.) scored the first Southern Maine goal, while Gilbert and Koray Celik (Ile-bizzard, Quebec) combined for 33 stops in the Husky net.
