Three Trinity Men's Lacrosse Players Collect Post-Season Honors
Hartford, Conn., June 19, 2012 – Trinity College senior captain goalkeeper Peter Johnson (Riverside, Conn.) and junior attackman Rob Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) were each named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III All-American Honorable Mention, while Nogueras graced the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III All-New England First Team, and junior midfielder Nick Shaheen (Williamsburg, Mass.) made the All-NEILA Second Team. Nogueras and Johnson were also chosen for the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Conference First Team, while Shaheen was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team as well. Most recently, Johnson was selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III All-New England Team.
Trinity, coached by Michael Higgins (2nd Season), posted an 11-7 record in 2012 and finished second in the NESCAC with a 7-3 conference mark. The Bantams qualified for the NESCAC Championship Tournament for the seventh year and the fifth time in the last six years, and downed Hamilton, 14-8, at home in the quarterfinals before bowing to Bowdoin, 10-8, at Tufts in their second-straight NESCAC Semifinal appearance. Trinity received its first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament and defeated Eastern Connecticut, 13-9, at home in its first NCAA game before closing the spring with a 17-8 loss at Tufts in the NCAA Second Round.
Nogueras paced the Trinity offensive attack with a team-high 42 goals (5th in NESCAC) and eight assists for a team-high total of 50 points and added 22 ground balls while starting all 18 games this spring. A graduate of St. Andrew's School, he is the son of son of Michele and Juan Nogueras.
Johnson, an All-NESCAC Second Teamer, All-New England First-Team selection, and an All-American Honorable Mention in 2011, totaled 212 saves (2nd in NESCAC, 11.78 per game) for a .578 save percentage and allowed 155 goals for an 8.58 GAA in 18 games and 1,084 minutes this spring. He was a 2012 pre-season All-American according to insidelacrosse.com, after finishing 17th nationally in save percentage in 2011 with a .620 mark and sixth in the nation in 2010 with a College-record 6.41 GAA, and was named the NESCAC Player of the Week once this spring. Johnson closed his collegiate career with 533 saves for a .594 save percentage and 364 goals allowed for a College-record GAA of 7.76 to go with a 31-17 won-loss record (new College record for wins) and 131 ground balls. An alum of the Taft School, Johnson graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in economics. He is the son of Peggy and Doug Johnson.
Shaheen, a 2011 All-New England Second Teamer and a two-time NESCAC All-Academic honoree, finished second on the team in scoring with 19 goals (T2nd on team) and 12 assists (2nd on team) while starting all 18 games in 2012. A graduate of Northampton High School, Shaheen is majoring in International Studies at Trinity. He is the son of Susan and George Shaheen.
