Trinity Men's Crews Close Season At ECAC Regatta Sunday
Hartford, Conn., May 8, 2009 - The Trinity College men's and women's rowing teams, which have a combined varsity-eight record of 23-2 this spring and finished second and third, respectively, in the New England Championships on Saturday, will each be competing in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational Regatta this weekend on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Trinity men are the defending and the 2006 ECAC Champions and the women, which won the event in 2005, were the runner-ups a year ago. The top men's and women's boat from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in the ECAC Grand Final for each also earns the league title, and the Bantam men have accomplished this feat the last four years.
The Bantam men's varsity eight crew, in its final season under Head Coach Larry Gluckman (6th Season), are 11-1 this spring and have appeared in the USRowing National Top 20 Poll for all divisions. Gluckman has been responsible for the vast and rapid ascension of Trinity's men's crew program to elite status, having guided the varsity eight to a 42-4 record in dual races during his tenure. Trinity has captured two Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational gold medals, three gold medals at the Head of the Charles Regatta, and the last four New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship crowns with Coach Gluckman at the helm. The Joy of Sculling Collegiate Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007, Gluckman gained international renown for the College when his varsity eight crew won the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2005 and earned a silver medal in the same event last summer.
The Bantam women, coached by 2008 Joy of Sculling Collegiate Coach of the Year Wesley Ng (3rd Season), are 12-1 this spring and ranked No. 3 in the nation according to (CRCA) Division III Poll. Trinity won the New England Championships last spring and has been selected to the NCAA Division III National Championship Regatta the last six seasons. Trinity first varsity eight won the grand final at the NCAA Regatta last spring and the Jefferies Cup Open+ Championship title at the Henley Women's Regatta last June.
Last Saturday, the Trinity men's varsity eight crew finished second in the grand final of the New England Rowing Championships in Worcester, Mass. The Bantams posted a time of 6:04.215, which was 1.39 seconds behind first-place Williams. The Bantams had won the last four New England men's varsity eight titles. Trinity's second varsity and novice eights both won their grand final races by wide margins. Trinity's women's varsity eight crew finished third in the grand final of the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond this afternoon. The Bantams posted a time of 6:58.521, which was 0.44 seconds behind second-place Bates and 2.64 slower than first-place Williams. New Hampshire, Holy Cross, and Smith followed in fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively. The Bantams were the defending New England women's varsity eight champions. Trinity's second varsity and third varsity eights both came in fourth place in their respective grand final races. In overall points, the Trinity men finished first and the women came in second place.
The men's first varsity eight boat for the ECAC Championships will be senior co-captain Eli Roxby (Paoli, Pa.), seniors Brian deRegt (Rowayton, Conn.), Tom Keller (Perrysburg, Ohio), and Alec Phillips (Essex, Mass.), senior coxswain Felipe Luisi (Bethesda, Md.), juniors Hal Ebbott (Brookline, Mass.), Ryan Flynn (Southborough, Mass.), Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Colin Touhey (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
The women's varsity eight boat will include senior tri-captains Natalie Jones (Haverford, Pa.), Ashley Swiggert (Basking Ridge, N.J.), and Amory Minot (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), senior Eveline Case (New Canaan, Conn.), juniors Ardath Dixon (Manchester, Mass.) and Eleanor Wierzbowski (Walpole, N.H.), junior coxswain Stephanie Apstein (Waban, Mass.), and sophomores Mina Aiken (Pam Beach, Fla.) and Jamie Callahan (North Andover, Mass.).
