Trinity Spoils Eastern Connecticut Men's Soccer Opener
Williamtic, Conn. - Freshman forward Dan Mayernick (Gladwyne, Pa.) and junior forward Samuel Wisner (Wayland, Mass.) scored second-half goals 14 minutes apart to lift the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 victory over the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in men's soccer action this afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.
Making its home debut, Eastern (1-1) was shut out by Trinity (2-0) for the fifth time in the last six meetings. Last year, the Warriors snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) with a 3-1 road win on the way to winning their first Little East Conference playoff title.
Coming off its first winning season in nine years - as well as a season-opening 5-0 win over Albertus Magnus Saturday -- Trinity had several opportunities in the final minutes of the first half, but couldn't break through until Mayernick took a return pass from senior midfielder Michael Van Beuren (Spring City, Pa.) after his own throw-in in the 62nd minute and beat Eastern freshman keeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, NJ) with a sliding shot in the box. Wisner, who nearly broke through for a goal midway through the first half, made it 2-0 when he one-timed a pass from sophomore midfielder Peter Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.) in the box inside the far left post.
All six of Trinity's second-half shots were on net as the
Bantams scored twice and forced Appel to make four saves. Senior
forward Rukevwe Ehwarieme (Norwich) proved to be
Eastern's most legitimate threat against Trinity. Ehwarieme took
nearly half (six of 14) of Eastern's shot, but forced Trinity
senior keeper Zac Trudeau (Norwood, Mass.) to make
only one save on those attempts. Last year, Trudeau played the
second half in net against the Warriors and was saddled with the
loss after giving up two goals. Eastern came up empty despite
matching Trinity with 14 shots, and holding a 7-2 advantage in
corner kicks. Both keepers were credited with six saves.
