Trinity Men's Soccer Edges Worcester State
Worcester, Mass. - Senior tri-captain forward Sam Wisner (Wayland, Mass.) scored the game-winning tally in the 89th minute to lift the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1 victory over the Worcester State College Lancers in men's soccer action this evening. Trinity, ranked No. 5 in New England, improves to 2-0, while the Lancers fall to 1-5 with their second loss in a row.
Trinity dominated the opening half of play, holding a 10-5 edge in shots, but could not take advantage of any of their opportunities. In the 17th minute, Trinity nearly scored the go-ahead marker on a strike by sophomore Mike Galluzo (Meriden, Conn.) from directly in front of the net, but his attempt sailed to the left.
Eight minutes into the second half, Bantam senior tri-captain midfielder Chris Doran (Wayland, Mass.) put the visitors up, 1-0, on his first goal of the year in the 54th minute off a feed by Wisner. Worcester State kept the ball on the Bantam side of the field for much of the final period, outshooting Trinity, 6-3, over the final 22 minutes of play. In the 86th minute Lancer senior Miguel Vidal (Grafton, Mass.) kicked perfect drive in front of the net and classmate Mark Johnson (Woburn, Mass.) knocked in the pass for his first marker of the season. Wisner scored the clincher three minutes later on a sideline pass from senior back Jason Kulik (Norwell, Mass.) for the game-winner.
The Bantams outshot Worcester State 19-15, but the Lancers held a 10-9 edge in the second half. WSC also had a 6-1 advantage in corners. Worcester State sophomore keeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, Mass.) collected nine saves while Trinity sophomore Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.) finished with three stops.
