Vargas Clinches Another Perfect Season For Trinity Men's Squash
Bantams Slip Past Princeton, 5-4, for 199 Wins In A Row
Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Andres Vargas (Bogota, Colombia) won the clinching match at the No. 7 spot to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 5-4 victory over the Princeton University Tigers in men's squash action this afternoon at Jadwin Courts. Trinity, ranked No. 1 in the nation, wins the Association Trophy, closes the regular season perfect for the 11th straight year (16-0) and extends the nation's longest winning streak in any sport to 199 triumphs in a row. No. 2-ranked Princeton finishes the dual match season at 11-1.
Bantam sophomore Chris Binnie (Kingston, Jamaica) pulled out a 3-2 win against Tiger sophomore Peter Sopher (Washington, D.C.) at the No. 9 spot to put Trinity on the board, after Princeton had taken a 2-0 lead. Senior captain Gustav Detter (Malmoe, Sweden) and freshman Vikram Malholtra (Mumbai, India) posted quick, 3-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 8, respectively, to knot the match at 3-3 and sophomore Parth Sharma (Jaipur, India) won, 3-1, in the No. 4 match to give the visitors a 4-3 lead with two matches remaining. Vargas outlasted Tiger freshman Kelly Shannon (Calgary, Alberta), 3-2, to clinch the win for the Bantams, but Princeton senior Mauricio Sanchez (Mexico City, Mexico) surprised top-ranked and two-time defending national singles champion Baset Chaudhry (Lahore, Pakistan) in the No. 1 match by the same score.
