Amherst Defeats Trinity In Men's Tennis


Amherst, Mass. - The No. 7-ranked Amherst College Lord Jeff men's tennis team remained unbeaten in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play after a 7-2 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams this afternoon at home.  Amherst improves to 21-4 in dual matches this year, and 5-0 in conference play. Trinity, ranked No. 19 nationally, drops to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the NESCAC.

Amherst took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with Amherst's number two pairs of Priit Gross (Tartu, Estonia) and Austin Chafetz (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) rebounding from a tough 8-1 defeat against Williams with an 8-0 win over Anson McCook (Miami, Fla.) and David Yahng (Hong Kong).

Trinity's third doubles team of Gautam Samarth (Pune, India) and Charles McConnell (Southampton, N.Y.) pulled out an 8-5 win over Amherst's Wes Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Andrew Jung (Battle Creek, Mich.) to remain undefeated for the season.

In singles play, the Bantams saw Amherst pull out to a quick 4-1 ead as Chafetz and Waterrman registered fast victories. The Bantams refused to give up, and put up a good fight in a number of singles matches.

Amherst clinched the victory with a Gross win at number five, edging Nick White (Wellesley, Mass.), 6-4, and, 7-5.   The Bantams took their lone singles win at number three, as McCook edged Jung 7-5, 6-3.
