Trinity Men's Tennis Opens 2016-17 Slate At Middlebury Invitational This Weekend

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College men's tennis team returns to the courts this weekend at the Middlebury Invitational for its first competition of the 2016-17 season. Under Head Coach Lori Shulman (2nd season), the Bantams were 8-7 a year ago and finished their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) schedule with a 3-6 clip. The Bantams must replace four senior starters who were lost to graduation, but return a crop of talent this fall led by senior tri-captains William Boyd (Hillsborough, Calif.), Rutendo Matingo (Weston, Mass.), and Jagger Reifler (Wayzata, Minn.).

"Fall is a great time to gain match experience and improve in the areas necessary to compete at the highest level possible in the spring dual matches," said Shulman. "We have a young team that certainly will be tested with trips to face great competition at Middlebury and Bates."

Boyd and Matingo return as doubles partners after a 2015-16 season that featured the pair as Trinity’s No. 3 duo. The two finished with a 7-7 record while also putting together solid seasons in singles action, and figure to be a large part of the team’s potential success this year. Junior Rex Glickman (Chappaqua, N.Y.) returns after a stellar sophomore season that saw him earn 2nd Team All-NESCAC honors for his play in doubles matches. Glickman finished 16-10 with all partners in doubles play and won nine singles matches. Riefler and junior Kyle Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) will both be major factors on the squash this year as they each return from injury-plagued 2015-16 campaigns.  Trinity's four-member first-year class has exciting potential as well.
