Trinity Men's Track and Field Athletes Set Three College Records in 2007-08


Hartford, Conn., August 22, 2008 - The Trinity College men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams, both coached by George Suitor (16th Season), enjoyed fine seasons in 2007-08.  The Bantams came in fifth place in both the New England Division III Indoor Championship Meet (61st at Nationals) and the NESCAC Championships, and 12th in the New England Division III Outdoor Championship Meet.

In the sprints, junior Sam Pegram (Wayland, Mass.) recorded the men's team's best time of 6.82 in the 55-meters, while senior captain Shaun McDonough (Worcester, Mass.) ran an 11.22 in the 100 meters, and sophomore Alex Baillargeon (Westbrook, Maine) and McDonough ran times of 22.86, and, 23.11, respectively, in the 200 meters.  Baillargeon also ran a 49.89 in the 400 meters, a 1:06.90 in the 500 meters, and a 1:22.30 in the 600 meters, and earned All-New England indoor honors in the 600 meters.  

Freshman Brendan Powers (Middleton, Mass.) posted a 1:52.93 in the 800 meters and a 2:28.96 in the 1,000 meters, and senior captain Matt Anderson (Manchester, Conn.) recorded a 1:52.64 in the men's 800 meters, while junior Sam Moorhead (Dedham, Mass.) and Anderson posted respective times of 3:52.98 and 3:54.82 in the 1,500 meters and 4:14.84 and 4:15.55 in the indoor mile.  Powers was the New England indoor champion in the 1,000 meters, and earned All-ECAC indoor and outdoor and All-NESCAC honors in the 800 meters, while Moorhead was all-ECAC in the 1,000 meters (indoor) and the 800 meters (outdoor), and Anderson was All-New England in the outdoor 800-meters in both the indoor and outdoor season and in the indoor mile. 

In the distance events, Moorhead and freshman Wesley Halstead (Woodbridge, Conn.) posted team men's team's top times of 8:52.25 and 8:53.71, respectively, in the 3,000 meters, while Halstead also posted a 15:06.82 in the 5,000 meters, and junior Hunter Norte (Ellington, Conn.) added a time of 15:15.88 in the event.  Junior Steven Sullivan (Pepper Pike, Ohio) posted the squad's best time in the 10,000 meters at 34:27.80.  Halstead's 5,000-meter time gave him the New England indoor championship title.

Junior Bill Monahan (Hingham, Mass.) recorded a time of 58.75 in the 400-meter hurdles, and Norte and Halstead registered times of 9:22.20, and 9:41.17, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.  Freshman Tim Murphy (New Canaan, Conn.) cleared a height of 6'05.50" in the high jump, while Pegram and senior captain Houston Gossett (Seattle, Wash.) posted leaps of 22'11.25" (new College record) and 22'04.50", respectively, in the long jump, and Gossett added a distance of 41'03.25" in the triple jump.  Murphy earned All-New England indoor honors in the high jump, while Gossett was All-New England and All-ECAC in the indoor long jump, and Pegram earned All-New England indoor and All-New England Open outdoor recognition in the long jump.

Freshman Mike Goulet (Glastonbury, Conn.) posted throws of 46'11.75" in the shot put, and 142'08" in the discus throw, while senior captain John Mihalko (Shelton, Conn.) recorded throws of 41'05.25" in the shot put, 42'08.25" in the indoor weight throw, 136'07.75" in the hammer throw, and 154'02" in the javelin, and sophomore Zach Lusk (Norwich, Conn.) added tosses of 49'01.50" in the weight throw and 152'03" in the hammer.  Goulet was an All-New England selection in the indoor and and outdoor shot put and an All-New England and All-New England Open honoree in the discus throw.
Two Bantam relay records were shattered in 2007-08, as Anderson, Norte, Powers, and Moorhead set a new College marks of 7:39.39 in the 4x800-meters and Anderson, Baillargeon, Powers , and Moorhead set a record of 9:59.18 in the distance medley relay.  The foursomes earned indoor All-New England Open and All-American honors in the distance medley relay and All-New England Open honors in the 4x800-meters.  Also in relays, Monahan, McDonough, Baillargeon, and freshman Ricky Lynn (Philadelphia, Pa.) took All-NESCAC and All-New England outdoor honors in the 4x100-meters. 

Senior Jesse Wanzer (Enfield, Conn.), Trinity's men's representative on the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team and a NESCAC All-Academic honoree, and senior and NESCAC All-Academic selection Tim Scarella (Valhalla, N.Y.) also close their careers their collegiate careers for the Bantam men's track and field team.
