Trinity Men's Cross Country Hosts Invitational To Start 2009 Campaign
Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College men's cross country squad, under 2008 NESCAC Coach of the Year George Suitor (18th Season), is excited about the prospects for a fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championship Meet in 2009. Last fall, Trinity finished second in the NESCAC Championship Meet and third in the New England Championships, before placing a best-ever seventh in the National Meet in Indiana. Senior co-captain Ryan Lane (Weston, Conn.), junior co-captain Brendan Powers (Middleton, Mass.) and junior Blake Fisher (Naperville, Ill.) will lead a young but deep and experienced squad this season. The Bantams, ranked No. 10 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) New England Division III Poll, open the 2009 season by hosting the Trinity Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester on Saturday, September 12 at 10:30 a.m.
Lane competed in the 2007 NCAA Nationals, while Powers and Fisher were both part of Trinity's top seven in the last two national championship races. Fisher is Trinity's top returning finisher from the 2008 NCAA Championships (68th). Sophomore Matthew Eremita (South Windor, Conn.) contributed as a rookie last fall and will be counted on for an even better sophomore season, while classmate Dan Scully (Amston, Conn.) enjoyed a fine spring track season after missing his first cross country campaign with an injury. Juniors Steve Garner (Yarmouthport, Mass.), Ed Harrington (Braintree, Mass.), Jason Wagner (Norwich, Conn.), and Ben Wheatley (Arlington, Mass.) will challenge freshman prospects for the remaining spots in the top seven.
