Tufts Softball Sweeps Trinity

Hartford, Conn. - Senior captain C Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.) had two hits and the game-winning RBI in the fourth inning of the first game and senior RHP Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, N.J.) hurled a one-hit shutout in the second game to lead the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to an 8/7-4/1 doubleheader sweep against the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon. Trinity drops to 9-9 overall and 2-3 in the division, while Tufts, ranked No. 8 in the nation, remains flawless at 20-0 overall and 4-0 in the NESCAC East.
Trinity led, 4-3, after three innings in the first game on two-run jacks in the first and third by senior co-captain Ariana Mullin (Woodbridge, Conn.) and sophomore 1B Nicole Nardella (Beverly, Mass.), respectively. In the fourth, Tufts scored twice on errors before senior captain 3B Samantha Kuhles (Somerville, N.J.) tied the game with an RBI single and Hovhannessian followed suit two batters later to give the Jumbos the lead for good at 5-4. Bantam freshman Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) took the loss in the circle and was victimized by six Trinity errors in the field. Trinity junior OF Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a triple.
Gelmetti surrendered just a three walks over the first 26 outs, before Trinity junior SS Patricia Cipicchio (Southmont, N.C.) squelched the no-hit bid with a double. Gelmetti promptly caught the last batter of the game looking for her third strikeout of the game. Jumbo senior 2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, Mass.) and junior SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin, Conn.) each had a pair of RBI for the Tufts offense.
