Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College softball team scored a combined 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the United States Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday afternoon at Trinity's softball field in Hartford. The Bantams won game one, 15-6 in five innings, before going on to take game two, 12-4 in six innings. Trinity improves to 14-9 with the two wins while Coast Guard falls to 13-13. Trinity returns to action this weekend when it hosts Tufts in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East series.
Junior captain Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) earned the win in the circle in game one for Trinity, her seventh of the season. Smith went the distance, scattering seven hits across five innings of work while striking out one. In game two, Trinity rookie Lindsay Golia (North Branford, Conn.) also earned her seventh win of the year in the circle, striking out a pair while allowing just three earned runs.
The Bantams jumped ahead with a three-run first inning to open up a 3-0 lead early in game one. Junior LF Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) crossed home on a Coast Guard wild pitch for the first run of the inning before a single up the box by first-year 1B Natalie Bruno (Stratham, N.H.) brought home sophomore C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.). Junior CF Meaghan Race (Grand Rapids, Mich.) lifted a fly ball to left field that scored sophomore SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) on the sacrifice to cap off the inning's scoring.
Coast Guard answered in a big way, putting up a five-spot in the top half of the second inning to jump ahead, 5-3. Francesca Farlow (Carrollton, Texas), Kayla Sowers (Rocklin, Calif.) and Claire Hurley (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) strung together RBI singles before Courtney McKenna (Topsfield, Mass.) drove home a pair on the fourth run-scoring single of the inning to give the Bears the lead.
Merullo led off the bottom of the second with a hard-hit single before junior captain 2B Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) walked. Up came Towner who smashed a double to right-center, scoring Merullo and Treglia. A Bruno RBI single followed by an Erickson run on a fielder's choice by Race put the Bantams up 7-5.
The Bantams went on to score eight unanswered in the following two innings to come away with the run-rule victory. Senior captain DP Victoria Baez (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) crushed a solo homerun in the third, coupled with RBIs from Towner and Erickson, before a five-run fourth, highlighted by pair of two-run singles by Treglia and Towner.
Trinity exploded for 12 runs on 10 hits in the second game of the doubleheader, another run-rule win for the hosts. Bruno, Erickson and Treglia led the offense with a pair of RBIs each while Merullo, Treglia and Towner all scored multiple runs. The Bears offense came from Malia Hindle (Seaville, N.J.) who went 3-for-3 with two runs and Emma Hvozdovich (Palm Harbor, Fla.) who hit a solo homerun.
The Bantams scored three runs in the first on a two-run double by Erickson and a ground out by Bruno before adding another in the second on a run-scoring single off the bat of Treglia. Coast Guard answered with a pair of runs in the next frame thanks to Hvozdovich's blast and an RBI double by Sharayah Simco (Florence, Ky.) but a five-spot by Trinity in the home half put the game out of reach. Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning but Trinity walked off on a fielder's choice by Haghdan that scored Erickson to seal the win.
