Hartford, Conn. – Junior SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) went 5-for-7 with three runs and two RBI to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 8/9-2/1 doubleheader sweep against the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials in softball action this afternoon. Trinity, which snaps a five-game losing skid, improves to 14-11, while the Colonials fall to 7-20-1. The second game went five innings due to the eight-run, mercy rule, as the Colonials committed eight errors including five in Trinity’s seven-run first inning.
Trinity senior RHP Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) was stellar in the opener, allowing four hits and two unearned runs with no walks and 10 strikeouts to improve to 8-7. In the nightcap, sophomore RHP Lindsay Pressman (Huntington, N.Y.) went the distance with four hits allowed, two walks, and one strikeout to improve to 4-2. Junior Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, Mass.) and sophomore Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, N.Y.) started for Western Connecticut and took the losses, falling to 2-1 and 1-10-1, respectively. Colonial sophomore Angelina Miller (Holbrook, N.Y.) relieved in both games, yielding three earned runs in five innings of work. Erickson finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the first game and 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the second. Merullo and Treglia had two hits apiece in the first game, and Witmer was 2-for-3 in game two. Treglia and Witmer both doubled in the opener. Nowak had two RBI for the Colonials, and senior Tori Dugan (Norwalk, Conn.) was 2-for-2 with a stolen base in game two.
Trinity broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of game one when senior 1B Katie Haghdan (Pelham, N.H.) reached on an error and later scored when first-year Samantha Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) got in a run down before getting caught stealing. Western Connecticut went ahead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth frame on a leadoff double by Tenke, a single by sophomore Natalia Hart (Milford, Conn.), a Bantam error in the outfield, and a sacrifice fly by senior Kayla Nowak (North Branford, Conn.).
Trinity rallied to score two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth, three more in the fifth, and two more in the sixth. Erickson singled to start the fourth inning, and Trinity rookie 3B Kaitlyn DeCapua (Milford, Mass.) doubled her in to tie the game at 3-3. Bantam junior C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) plated the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Senior 2B Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) scored on a double steal in the fifth and classmate Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) had an RBI single in the sixth to highlight Trinity’s fifth and sixth innings.
After going ahead, 1-0, in the top of the first inning on a two-out, RBI double by Dugan, Western Connecticut endured a nightmarish bottom of the inning. Trinity sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven times on four hits, five Colonial errors, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch. Treglia and Merullo scored the first two Trinity runs when they came home after a Witmer single and an error in the outfield. Erickson also had an RBI single in the inning. The Bantams added another run in the second inning on an RBI single by DeCapua and took the eight-run lead in the fourth stanza on an error, a single by Towner, a walk by DeCapua, and an RBI groundout by senior CF Meaghan Race (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Western Connecticut runners reached third base in the second and fifth innings, but Pressman pitched out of jams both times.
