Amherst, Mass. - Mackenzie Murphy pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts to lead the Williams College Ephs to a 7-1 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in the quarterfinal round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Softball Championship Tournament at Amherst College this afternoon.  Trinity closes its season at 17-14, while the Ephs advance to the semifinals today at 5 p.m. with their third NESCAC Tournament victory over the Bantams in as many seasons.  Senior Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) and junior Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) had two hits apiece for the Bantams.

Williams jumped out to a big lead with five runs in the second inning of Trinity senior captain Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.).  Kirstin Mapes led off with a single and later came around to score on a Trinity throwing error for the game's first run.  The Ephs loaded the bases on a walk and a single by Brenna Martinez and scored four more runs on two hit batsmen and two sacrifice flies.  Trinity failed to score in its first three turns at bat despite putting runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings, but got on the board in the fourth frame on a double down the left-field line by first-year Cassidy Schiff (Darien, Conn.) and a sacrifice fly by senior captain Katie Haghdan (Pelham, N.H.).

Casey Pelz answered immediately for the Ephs with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, and scored again in the fifth inning on a Bantam error.  Trinity threatened again in the fifth on singles by Merullo and Erickson but failed to score and Murphy retired the final seven batters in order.  Bantam sophomore RHP Lindsay Pressman (Huntington, N.Y.) threw well in relief of Smith, allowing five hits and just a single earned run over four innings.  Smith dropped to 10-9 with just two of five runs earned over two innings.
