Danbury, Conn. - Freshman Gabrielle Hurlburt (Thomaston, Conn.) grabbed MVP honors with 19 points and six rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 70-63 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in the Hat City Women's Basketball Invitational Finals this afternoon at Feldman Arena. Trinity falls to 802 with its first loss in nine games. Western Connecticut's Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, Conn.), Trinity's Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.), Ramapo College's Tia Solomon (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Wheaton College's Oppie Morris (Ware, Mass.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hurlbert connected on 7 of 13 shots from the field, had two assists and a pair of steals to guide the Colonials, now 8-3 on the season.LaBonte and Emma Belcourt (Cromwell, Conn.) added 17 and 15 points, respectively for the winners.Erickson netted a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bantams. Trinity senior co-captain Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) added 10 points while Erin Cunningham (Wilton, Conn.) yanked down a game-high 11 boards for Trinity.
Western led for nearly the first three quarters and built its largest lead of 12 points, 29-17 following a pair of free throws by Belcourt with 4:46 remaining in the first half. The Colonials also led by a dozen points, 38-26 when Hurlbert buried a bucket in the paint in the opening seconds of the third stanza. Trinity senior co-captain guard Kaitlin Lewis (Demarest, N.J.) drained a three-pointer at the 5:21 mark of the third quarter to cap a 12-0 run by the Bantams and knotted the contest at 38-38. Western re-took the lead, 55-53, on a long three-pointer from Belcourt at the 6:27 mark of the final quarter. The Colonials held the lead the rest of the way for its seventh-straight victory.
