Trinity Women's Basketball Repeats As Hockenbury Champions With Win At Norwich

Northfield, Vt. - Sophomore center Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 56-50 win over the Norwich University Cadets in the Ed Hockenbury Women's Basketball Invitational Finals this afternoon at Andrews Hall.  Trinity wins its fourth game in a row to improve to 4-1 and repeats as Hockenbury champions, while the Cadets drop to 3-2.

Trinity senior co-captain guard Kaitlin Lewis (Demarest, N.J.) added 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and sophomore guard Rebecce Riefler (Garden City, N.Y.) scored 10 points.  First-year forward Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) was great off the bench with six points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals for the Bantams.  Erickson received the Most Outstanding Player Award and joined Lewis on the all-tournament squad.

Trailing, 25-22, at halftime, the Bantams scored seven of the first 11 points after the break including four in a row on a jumper and two free throws by Erickson to tie the game at 29-all with 6:32 remaining in the third quarter.  Erickson scored six straight to turn a 31-29 deficit into a 35-31 lead moments later and Riefler added a long ball to push the advantage to seven.

A 10-0 spurt between the end of the third frame and the first two minutes of the final stanza pushed the Bantam lead to double digits where it stayed until a Kayle Mercer free throw made it 53-44 with 3:24 on the clock.  Mercer and Heather LeBlanc added four more from the charity stripe for the Cadets in the final 1:24, but a jumper by Riefler with 14 seconds ensured the Bantam victory.
