Danbury, Conn. - Senior guard Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) and first-year center Emily Peters (North Attleboro, Mass.) had 10 points apiece to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 68-52 win over the Wheaton College Lyons in the opening round of the Hat City Women's Basketball Invitational at Western Connecticut State University's Feldman Arena this evening. The Bantams, winners of nine in a row, will face the host Colonials in the Hat City Finals tomorrow at 4 p.m. Wheaton will Ramapo, a 52-50 loser today against Western Connecticut, in the consolation game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Trinity sophomore Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) chipped in nine points while pulling down a game-high eight boards, and freshman Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) came off the bench for eight points and four assists for the Trinity. Natalie Wind (New Canaan, Conn.) led the Lyons, now 2-8, with eight points. The Bantams shot 50 percent from the field, including 59.3 percent in the first half.
The Bantams used a 12-0 run to turn a 7-7 tie into a 19-7 lead late in the opening quarter. Senior co-captain guard Kaitlin Lewis (Demarest, N.J.) connected twice from deep during the spurt. Trinity went on to score 27 points in the opening frame for a 27-12 lead, and maintained a double-digit advantage for all but 30 seconds the rest of the way. The Bantams led, 40-26, at the break, and, 53-32, late in the third quarter on a put-back by Erickson. Wind cut the Lyon deficit to 57-48 with 3:34 remaining with a jumper, but Peters and Erickson combined for the game's next eight points to put it out of reach.
