Komarek Shines in Trinity Womens Ice Hockey Tie with Utica

Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore defender Laura Komarek
(Plymouth, Minn.) scored two late goals to force overtime,
which resulted in a tie between the Trinity College Bantams and the
Utica College Pioneers in women's ice hockey action this afternoon
at Williams Rink. Trinity moves to 7-2-1, while Utica is now
7-4-2 after the tie.
In the second consecutive overtime game between the two teams,
Trinity relied on late goals for their comeback. Similar to
last night's game, Utica jumped out to a 1-0 lead and had a 3-1
advantage late in the second period. Komarek then scored with
15 seconds remaining in the second to cut the Utica lead to one
goal before the final period of play. After Trinity, which
outshot Utica 50-32, could not capitalize on several scoring
opportunities in the third, Komarek was able to notch her second
goal of the game, and her third this weekend, with just 3:26
remaining to force overtime.
It was a frustrating tie for the Pioneers, who had two-goal leads
in both games against the Bantams this weekend, and came out with
no wins. Utica junior goalkeeper Jill Doherty
(Wellesley, Mass.) was impressive again, making 47 saves
in the game. First-year forward Payson Sword
(Princeton, N.J.) added another goal this afternoon, after
scoring the game-winner in overtime last night.
Utica sophomores Lynny Gonzalez (Rochester, N.Y.)
and Sara George (Gaithersburg, Md.) scored in the
game, as did senior forward Michelle Witz (Pelham,
N.Y.), who scored on back-to-back days for the
Pioneers. Trinity junior goalkeeper Isabel Iwachiw
(New York, N.Y.) collected 29 saves, including four in
overtime.
Trinity opens a two-day, two-game series at NESCAC rival
Middlebury College, ranked No. 3 in the nation, on Fri., Jan. 16 at
7 p.m.
