Late Goals Give Trinity Women’s Ice Hockey Comeback Overtime Win

Hartford, Conn. - First-year forward Payson Sword (Princeton, N.J.) scored late in regulation and sophomore forward Jill Roloff (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Trinity College Bantams a 4-3 win over the Utica College Pioneers in women's ice hockey action this afternoon at Williams Rink.  Trinity improves to 7-2 with the win, while Utica drops to 7-4-1 on the season.

The scoreboard left just :23 seconds remaining when Roloff scored in overtime to give Trinity their first lead of the game, and a hard-fought comeback win against a strong Utica team.

The Pioneers led by as many as two goals in the second period, but Trinity chipped away, finding themselves down just one goal in the third, setting the stage for what would be an unlikely finish.  With the game knotted at 2-2, senior forward Michelle Witz (Pelham, N.Y.) re-gained the lead for Utica midway through the third, giving the Pioneers a 3-2 advantage. Sword picked the perfect time to score her first goal of the season - with just 2:21 left in regulation - tying the score at 3-3.  Utica was unable to answer before time expired in the final period, sending the game to overtime.

Utica sophomore forward Samantha Glocking (Carleton Place, Ontario) netted her fifth goal of the season to get the scoring started in the first period.  The Pioneers padded their lead with a goal from sophomore forward Meagan Sudik (West Bend, Wisc.) in the second period, before sophomore defender Laura Komarek (Plymouth, Minn.) initiated the Trinity comeback with a goal late in the same period.  Trinity sophomore defender Michelle Benjamin (Reading, Mass.) then tied the game at 2-2 in the third, before the late Witz goal.

Despite the loss, Utica junior goalkeeper Jill Doherty (Wellesley, Mass.) made several outstanding saves in net, stopping 37 of Trinity's 41 shots.  Trinity sophomore goalkeeper Hilary Novik (Lakeville, Conn.), making her first start of the season, collected 19 saves for the win.  Komarek, Roloff, Sudik and Glockling added assists in the game, while sophomore forwards Alexa Guglielmi (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Kim Weiss (Potomac, Md.) each had two assists for the Bantams.

Trinity returns to action in Game 2 of a double header against Utica at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
