Trinity Women's Lacrosse Seniors Close Record-Setting Careers


Hartford, Conn., August 18, 2008 - The Trinity College women's lacrosse team, coached by Kate Livesay (2nd Season), posted an 11-7 overall record and finished third in the NESCAC with a 6-3 league mark.  The Bantams downed Bowdoin, 12-9, for the first NESCAC Championship Tournament victory and followed that with a 10-9 triumph in double overtime against Amherst in the NESCAC Semifinals.  Trinity lost to Colby, 14-12, in the league title game, but qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship Tourney for the second season in a row.  The Bantams lost to Babson, 19-10, in the NCAA First Round and finished the season as the No. 12-ranked team in the nation. 

Senior captain attacker C.J. Yanofsky (Needham, Mass.) started all 18 games and led the Bantams in scoring with a team- and NESCAC-high 57 goals, 21 assists (2nd on team, 9th in NESCAC), and 78 points (2nd in NESCAC), including three game-winning goals and a team-high 14 free-position goals, and added 12 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.  Freshman midfielder Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) finished second in scoring with 43 goals (9th in NESCAC) and a team-high 22 assists (6th in NESCAC) for 65 points (4th in NESCAC) and added 16 ground balls, 33 draw controls (2nd on team), and 12 caused turnovers in 17 games (all starts), while classmate Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) added 48 goals (2nd on team, 7th in NESCAC) and seven assists for 55 points with 10 free-position goals, 19 ground balls, and 16 draw controls in 18 games (14 starts) at attck.  Sophomore attacker Jennifer Calver (Barnard, Vt.) notched 25 goals and five assists for 30 points with 12 ground balls, and a team-high 42 draw controls in 16 games (15 starts) with 12 ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Sarah Remes (Silver Spring, Md.) had 17 goals and six assists for 23 points with 28 ground balls, 21 draw controls, and 13 caused turnovers in 17 games (all starts), and freshman midfielder Alisen Urquhart (Redding, Conn.) notched 16 goals and five assists for 21 points with 16 ground balls and 16 draw controls in 18 games (six starts).  Calver and Romanowsky were each named as NESCAC Player of the Week once this season.   Yanofsky closes her fine career with 161 goals and 65 assists (new College record) for 226 points, 78 ground balls, and 59 caused turnovers in 63 games.

Junior Carrie Disa (Wilbraham, Mass.) was effective at both attack and in the midfield and recorded eight goals and three assists for 11 points, 21 ground balls and 21 draw controls in 2008.  Junior Lauren Peck (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Anne Cook (Washington, D.C.) each played in all 18 games in both the midfield and on defense, as Peck picked up a team-high 34 ground balls with 14 draw controls, and 16 caused turnovers (2nd on team) with 17 starts and Cook recorded one goal, 14 ground balls, 32 draw controls, and 11 caused turnovers in their first seasons as regulars.  

Senior captains Caroline Boiardi (Washington, D.C.) and Ellen Cohn (Wyndmoor, Pa.) and junior Kristina Scontras (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) anchored the defense for the third straight year, and all three started every game this spring.  Boiardi, who represents Trinity women's lacrosse on the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team, totaled 17 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers this spring, while Cohn added 14 ground balls and a team-high 19 caused turnovers, and Scontras registered one goal, 23 ground balls, and 18 draw controls.  Senior captain goalie Michelle Smith (Wayland, Mass.) played all 18 games and 1,096 minutes in goal, finishing with a NESCAC-high 226 saves (3rd in nation) for a NESCAC-low .531 save percentage (20th in nation), and 200 goals allowed for a 10.94 GAA, an 11-7 record, and 30 ground balls (2nd on team). Boiardi finishes her career with one assist, 85 ground balls, and 50 caused turnovers in 61 games, while Cohn closes her career with 56 ground balls and 50 caused turnovers in 43 games and 40 starts.  In her collegiate career, Smith finished with 755 saves (new College record) for a .538 save percentage, 649 goals allowed for a 10.24 GAA and a 33-30 won-loss record in 63 games and 3,802 minutes in goal.

Other Bantam veterans who made significant contributions to the team this season include junior attackers Megan Hannigan (Rye, N.Y.) and Jessica Schultz (Troy, N.Y.), sophomore M/D Carolyn Wolcott (Hamilton, Mass.), sophomore attacker Kristin Phelps (Sudbury, Mass.), and freshman attacker Christina Bradley (Wellesley, Mass.).  Hannigan notched a goal and two assists 10 games with one start, while Schultz tallied six goals and five assists in 15 games (three starts), Wolcott added two goals and 10 ground balls in 14 games (one start), Phelps scored four times and assisted on one goal in seven games (one start), and Bradley had two goals in 10 games.

Yanofsky was selected to the 2008 WomensLacrosse.com Division III All-American Second Team, and the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA)/US Lacrosse Division III All-American Third Team.  Yanofsky and Smith each graced the NESCAC All-Conference First Team, while Irvine and Romanowsky were each named to both the All-NESCAC Second Team and the WomensLacrosse.com National All-Rookie Team.  Yanofsky and Romanowsky were each selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III All-New England First Team and the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-Berkshire Regional First Team and Smith, Irvine, Boiardi and Remes made the All-Berkshire Regional Second Team.  Cohn, Disa, and Schultz were named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team, while Cohn and Disa also graced the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll.
