Trinity Women's Lacrosse Wins Easily Against Buffalo State In NCAA Second Round

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College Bantams led wire to wire in a 17-6 victory over the visiting Buffalo State College Bengals in an NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Second Round game this afternoon on Robin Sheppard Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 4 in the nation, improves to 18-1, tying the College-record for wins set last spring, and advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third straight year and the seventh time in its history.  The Bengals close the year at 14-7.  Trinity will host Colby, which downed Messiah, 16-5, in the other NCAA Second Round game on Sheppard Field this afternoon, in the NCAA Quarterfinal game tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Trinity senior attackman Caite Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) scored back-to-back unassisted goals followed by an unassisted tally by senior co-captain midfielder Liz Bruno (Andover, Mass.) to give the Bantams a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.  Bengal sophomore midfielder NikkI Paulhardt (Hanover, Minn.) got the visitors on the board with a free-position goal at 24:30 of the first half, and senior attacker Karen Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) scored from Paulhardt less than two minutes later to cut the Trinity advantage to 3-2.  The Bantams answered with a 4-0 run that included a pair of unassisted scores by junior attacker Hadley Duncan (Rye, N.Y.) to push the lead back up to 7-2 with 13:11 left before halftime.  Irvine fed Bruno for a goal with 25 seconds left before the break, giving Trinity a 10-3 advantage.  Buffalo State junior attacker Ashley Caporizzo (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the second half, but Trinity outscored the Bengals, 7-2, the rest of the way.

Bruno and Irvine totaled four points apiece with three goals and one assist, while Duncan also had a hat trick, and sophomore attacker Shea Kusiak (Longmeadow, Mass.) led all scorers with five points on two goals and three assists.  Bruno also notched four ground balls and six draw controls, while junior midfielder Megan Leonhard (Summit, N.J.) added a goal, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers, and junior Olivia Whitney (Danvers, Mass.) made two saves to improve to 16-1 in the Trinity cage.  Shaddock paced the Bengals with two goals and one assist, while senior attacker Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post, N.Y.) assisted on two scores, and rookie goalie Colleen George (Johnson City, N.Y.) made 12 saves.
