Trinity Women's Lacrosse Downs Hamilton In Battle Of Nation's Top-Ranked Teams

Hartford, Conn. – Junior midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) and first-year attacker Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored four times each to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 15-7 victory over the visiting Hamilton College Continentals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon on Sheppard Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 1 nationally, improves to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the NESCAC with its 10th win in a row, while the No. 2-ranked Continentals drop to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the league with their first loss in six games.  As part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program, the players and staff wore pre-game shirts designed to spread awareness of the fight against the deadly disease.

Trinity used a 3-0 run early in the first half to gain a three-goal cushion at 4-1 and scored the first six goals of the second half to put the game away at 13-3 before Hamilton scored four goals in the final 11:40.  Bantam sophomore Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) scored from first-year midfielder Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.) to give Trinity the lead for good at 2-1 4:46 into the game, and senior attacker Molly Cox (Norwell, Mass.) scored two in row over the next 4:24.  Junior attacker Caroline McCarthy (Belmont, Mass.) brought the Continentals to within two goals at the 18:04 mark of the first frame, but Trinity answered with three of the final four tallies before the break which all came on free-position shots.  McInerney scored her first of the game with 33 seconds on the clock to give Trinity a 7-3 lead at the break.  Griffin and McInerney broke the game away with five goals between them over the first 11:12 of the second stanza.  Freshman midfielder Darby Philbrick (Alexandria, Va.) and sophomore midfielder Morgan Fletcher (Weston, Mass.) scored twice each for the Continentals to keep the score from getting out of hand.

Cox finished with two goals and an assist, while Lyne and senior tri-captain attacker Renee Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) also scored twice, and sophomore midfielder Nicole Stauffer (Cheshire, Conn.) added one goal and one assist for Trinity.  Bantam sophomore Meghan Collins (Marblehead, Mass.) had five draw controls and Lyne added four, as Trinity finished with a 15-to-8 advantage on the draw overall, while Collins and senior defender Lindsay Mullaney (Wellesley, Mass.) led the home team with three ground balls apiece.  Junior Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) totaled five saves between them in goal, as the Bantam defense held Hamilton to just 14 shots over 30 minutes.  Fletcher had a hat trick plus an assists, while Philbrick added two goals and one assist, senior Ashleigh Stephan (Avon, Conn.) contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers, and junior defender Hannah Whithiam (Greenwich, Conn.) caused three turnovers for Hamilton.  Continental sophomore backstop Hannah Rubin (Atherton, Calif.) made five saves.
