Five Trinity College Wrestlers Close Careers
Hartford, Conn., March 25, 2008 - The Trinity College wrestling
team, coached by Steve Makein (1st Season),
finished the 2007-08 season with a 3-18 overall record and a
14th-place finish in the New England Wrestling Association
(NEWA). Bantam sophomore tri-captain Jacob Gire
(Union City, Calif.) earned All-New England honors in the
141-pound weight class at the NEWA Championships, winning three out
of his five matches to place fourth in the bracket.
Gire led Trinity with a 25-6 record this season and recorded a
team-high seven pins, while senior tri-captain 149-pounder
Derek Cohen (Sharon, Mass.) was 13-5, junior
197-pounder Patrick Kumf (Milford, Mass.) was
13-13, and senior 157-pounder Ralph Fedele (Verbank,
N.Y.) was 5-6. Sophomore Max Walk (Paoli,
Pa.) was 8-23 predominantly at 125 pounds, while junior
Keith Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 7-21 at 133
pounds, and freshmen Nick Stewart (Sharon, Mass.)
and Ben Speicher (Boston, Mass.) posted 6-18
records, mostly at 157 and 174 pounds, respectively. Senior
tri-captain Max Weisz (Belmont, Mass.) went 4-13
at 165 pounds and classmate Joe Hern (Quincy,
Mass.) finished 2-11 at 174 pounds. Freshman
184-pounder Chuk Kanu (Bronx, N.Y.) won twice in
20 matches at 184 pounds and senior tri-captain Nikolai
Harovas (West Hartford, Conn.) won two times in 23 matches
in heavyweight bouts. Freshman Jason Orloff (Goshen,
N.Y.) was 2-7 at 184 pounds and fellow rookie
Cameron Reed (Elgin, Ill.) was 1-8 at several
weight classes. Cohen and Fedele each pinned three opponents
during the year.
Cohen closes his solid career with a 31-46 record and five pins,
while Fedele finishes at 21-36 with seven pins, Weisz ends his
career at 13-30 with two pins, Hern closes his career with a 19-49
mark and one pin, and Harovas winds up his collegiate career with a
21-52 record and two pins.
