Trinity Wrestling's Gire And Kumf Collect Academic Honors

Hartford, Conn., Aug. 11, 2009 -Trinity College junior co-captain Jacob Gire (Union City, Calif.) was selected as the College's 2009 Bob Harron Award recipient as Trinity's junior male scholar athlete of the year. Gire and senior co-captain Patrick Kumf (Milford, Mass.) were also both selected to the 2009 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Academic Team and the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) national academic team. Each student-athlete selected to the NESCAC All-Academic Team must be a starter or a key reserve for a varsity team and maintain at least a 3.35 grade-point average, and each student-athlete chosen for the NCWA award must have a long history of athletic success at the collegiate level and maintain a cumulative g.p.a. of 3.2 or better. Kumf is a two-time NESCAC All-Academic selection.
The Trinity College team, coached by Steve Makein (2nd Season), finished the 2008-09 season with a 5-16 overall record, finished 12th in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Championships, and bested their 2007-08 finish in the NEWA Championships by five places with a ninth-place performance to close the campaign.
Gire was 23-4 with four pins this season at 141 pounds, leading the teams in wins and winning percentage, and is recognized in the Northeast as a top-tier wrestler. A three-year co-captain and a three-time All-New England honoree, Gire finished second in the 141-pound division in the 2008 NEWA Championships and was selected as an alternate to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Gire, who aspires to attend medical school and eventually become a surgeon, has compiled a near flawless 3.99 g.p.a. in the challenging field of biology, has completed several research projects, received recognition for his work in chemistry, and has already gained substantial experience in the medical world. This summer, Gire has traveled to Honduras for a program he and two other students created though a Kathryn Davis Project for Peace Grant, where they will be giving seminars to women about the H.I.V. virus. He will also spend time in Tegucigalpa working with children and teens to help build their literacy skills and self-confidence. A graduate of James Logan High School, he is the son of Doug and Tania Gire.
Kumf was 15-7 with three pins this season at 197 pounds, and finished 39-39 with three pins in his collegiate career. An alum of Milford High School, Kumf graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in economics. He is the son of Donna and Scott Kumf and the grandson of Boston Celtic great Tommy Heinsohn.
