Trinity Wrestling Improves League Standing By Five Places In 2009

Hartford, Conn., August 27, 2009 - The Trinity College wrestling team, coached by Steve Makein (2nd Season), finished the 2008-09 season with a 5-16 overall record, finished 12th in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Championships, and bested their 2007-08 finish in the NEWA Championships by five places with a ninth-place performance to close the campaign. Bantam sophomore tri-captain Jacob Gire (Union City, Calif.) earned All-New England honors in the 141-pound weight class at the NEWA Championships and was selected as an alternate to the NCAA Division III Championships, winning four out of his five matches to place second in the bracket. Freshman heavyweight Greg Vaughan (Hingham, Mass.) came in fourth place at the NEWA Championships with three wins in five bouts including a pair of pins in the first two rounds.
Gire led Trinity with a 23-4 record this season and recorded four pins, while Vaughan was 30-6 with a team-high 17 pins, senior co-captain 197-pounder Patrick Kumf (Milford, Mass.) was 15-17, and junior 125-pounder Max Walk (Paoli, Pa.) was 14-12. Sophomore Emeka Kanu (Bronx, N.Y.) was 13-15 predominantly at 184 pounds, while freshman James Nelson (Malvern, Pa.) went 9-14 at 174 pounds, and sophomore Nick Stewart (Sharon, Mass.) was 6-14 at 149 pounds. Junior Max Stratouly (Boston, Mass.) was 5-20 at 133 pounds, while sophomore Ben Speicher (Boston, Mass.) posted a 3-18 record at 165 pounds, and freshman Alex Schreiber (Washington, D.C.) was 3-18 wrestling mostly at 157 pounds. Sophomore John Sweeney (Wayne, Pa.) went 4-4 at heavyweight and rookie 157-pounder Richard Curtan (Haverhill, Mass.) recorded a 1-8 mark. Stewart finished second on the squad with six pins, while Sweeney posted all four of his victories on pins to tie Gire for third on the team.
Kumf closes his solid career with a 39-39 record and three pins, while classmate Keith Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who missed all but three bouts in 2008-09 with an injury, completes his collegiate career with a 27-62 record at 125, 133 and 141 pounds.
