Gire Falls In Weight Class Finals, Trinity Finishes 9th At New Englands

Springfield, Mass. - Junior co-captain Jacob Gire (Union City, Calif.) won four of his five matches to record a second-place finish in the 141-pound weight class, as the Trinity College Bantams placed ninth in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships this weekend at Springfield College.

Gire quickly pinned Sean Scales (Sterling, Va.) of Norwich in 2:37 in his first match and went on to win his second match against Doug Christensen (Middletown, N.Y.) of Southern Maine, 10-3, before dropping a 6-4 bout against Mike Trasso, of Rhode Island College, in the semifinal round.  Gire went on to win in the finals of the consolation bracket and advanced to the winner's bracket.  He finished second overall after losing to Corey Paulish  (Ridgefield, Conn.) of Williams, 11-2, in the finals. Gire earns All-New England recognition for his outstanding performance and was named as an alternate to the NCAA Division III National Championships next weekend.

Bantam freshman heavyweight Greg Vaughan (Hingham, Mass.) earned a fourth-place finish to join Gire as an All-New England honoree.  Vaughan won his first two matches by fall before being pinned by Glenn Gleesman (Aptos, Calif.) of MIT, in the winner's bracket semifinals.  Vaughan added another pin in the loser's bracket semis, but fell to Dan Conroy (Malvern, N.Y.), of Wesleyan, 13-9, in the loser's bracket final.
