Trinity Wrestling Finishes Sixth In Ted Reese Invitational

Bantam Frosh Vaughan Dominates Heavyweights

Hartford, Conn. - Freshman Greg Vaughan (Hingham, Mass.) won four matches, one by fall, two by a combined score of 5-0, and the final by injury default to take the heavyweight class title and lead the Trinity College Bantams to sixth place in the Ted Reese Wrestling Invitational at the University of Southern Maine this afternoon.

Vaughan won his first bout by pin in 2:55, and edged a Division I opponent from the University of New Hampshire in his second match to reach the semifinals.  Vaughan again posted shutout in his third match, 3-0, against the top-seeded wrestler in the tournament from Division I Army to advance the finals.  He earned his fourth victory of the day over a Division II opponent from American International to take the tournament crown as the No. 5 seed.

Fellow Bantam rookie James Nelson (Malvern, Pa.) pinned his first round opponent to reach the quarterfinals of the 165-pound tournament, and recovered from a 15-6 loss to the top seed and eventual champion to rattle off three straight triumphs in the consolation bracket and earn a spot on the third-place match.  Nelson, unseeded, defeated sophomore teammate Ben Speicher (Boston, Mass.), 7-2, and edged the No. 3 seed in the bracket, 10-6, before dropping a 13-6 decision in the third-place match against the No. 4 seed.  Trinity sophomore Emeka Kanu (Bronx, N.Y.) lost his first match at 174 pounds, but defeated consecutive foes from Division I New Hampshire, one by pin in just 33 seconds, to reach the third-place match.  Kanu, unseeded in the bracket, was beaten, 12-7, by the No. 4 seed and settled for fourth.
