Trinity Wrestling Pulls Away From Southern Maine For First Dual Win
Worcester, Mass. - Senior co-captain Patrick Kumf (Milford, Mass.) earned a major decision, 12-3, in the 197-pound bout to lead the Trinity College Bantams to 29-16 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a wrestling super quad match at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Trinity, which lost its first two matches of the afternoon, 35-17, against Williams and, 29-9, against the host WPI Engineers, is now 1-7. Trinity's final scheduled match against MIT was postponed so the teams could avoid the worst of tonight's snowstorm in New England.
With Southern Maine holding a 16-13 edge, Bantam freshman James Nelson (Malvern, Pa.) posted a 6-3 triumph at 174 pounds to tie the score at 16-16, and sophomore Emeka Kanu (Bronx, N.Y.) pulled out a 4-2 victory at 184 pounds to give Trinity a 19-16 lead. Kumf added four points to the lead with his lopsided win and freshman heavyweight Greg Vaughan (Hingham, Mass.) took a forfeit in the last bout of the match to account for a 29-16 final tally. Vaughan finished 3-0 for the day, while Gire, Kanu, Nelson, and sophomore 125-pounder Max Walk (Paoli, Pa.) were each 2-1 in the three matches.
