Trinity's Gire And Vaughan Sweep Matches at New England Wrestling Duals


Bantams Down Coast Guard, Finish 12th Overall

Bristol, R.I.. - Junior co-captain 149-pounder Jacob Gire (Union City, Calif.) and freshman heavyweight Greg Vaughan (Hingham, Mass.) each posted 4-0 records, as the Trinity College Bantams won one out of four matches and finished 12th in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Championships at Roger Williams University this afternoon. 

Trinity opened the 15-team tournament with a 34-11 loss to the Wesleyan University Cardinals, but rallied to defeat the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears, 31-16, in the consolation bracket.  The Bantams dropped a 34-11 match against the Plymouth State University Panthers in the consolation semifinals and closed the tournament with a 28-16 loss to the Norwich University Cadets in the 11th-place match.  Trinity is now 3-11 in dual matches this season.  Johnson and Wales University won the championship title with four wins.

Gire won three matches by technical fall and earned a major decision in his other win in the tournament, while Vaughan, ranked No. 5 in New England, recorded three pins after edging No. 3-ranked Dan Conroy, of Wesleyan, 1-0, in his first bout.  Senior co-captain Patrick Kumf (Milford, Mass.) added victories in the Wesleyan, Coast Guard, and Norwich matches for the Bantams.
