Trinity Wrestling Downs WPI And Southern Maine At New England Duals Tourney
Bridgewater, Mass. - Freshman 197-pounder Petros Hologitas (Rockland, Mass.) won all four of matches to lead the Trinity College Bantams to wins over the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers and the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the Headlock For Hunger New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Championship Tournament this afternoon at Bridgewater State University. Trinity, seeded No. 12 of 14 teams in the field, lost to No. 5-seeded Plymouth State, 24-15, in the opening round, but rallied to defeat No. 13-seeded WPI, 25-24, and No. 9-seeded Southern Maine, 29-12, before falling to No. 10-seeded Roger Williams, 26-12, in the ninth-place match to take 10th overall and improve its season record to 2-5.
Hologitas won, 3-2, in his Plymouth State match, and, 16-6, in his WPI match, earned a forfeit against Southern Maine, and finished with a 7-3 win in the Roger Williams match. Bantam junior heavyweight Greg Vaughn (Hingham, Mass.) pinned his first three opponents before suffering a 5-1 loss against his Roger Williams opponent, while senior captain 165-pounder Ben Speicher (Boston, Mass.), sophomore 141-pounder Daniel Lofrese (Stewart Manor, N.Y.), and sophomore 184-pounder William Youngblood (Bernardsville, N.J.) were also 3-1 for the day.
Wesleyan University captured the Championship on Sunday afternoon as the second-seeded Cardinals knocked off number five seed Plymouth State University, 24-12, in the title match. Wesleyan won the tournament for the first time in the 11-year history of the event. Following Wesleyan and Plymouth in the standings were Springfield College in third place, Williams College in fourth and Rhode Island College in fifth. Host Bridgewater State University rounded out the top six teams. Wesleyan went 3-0 after receiving a first round bye. The Cardinals defeated Coast Guard Academy, 37-6, in the quarterfinals and third-seeded Williams College, 28-7, in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. The 14 Division III New England wrestling teams that competed in the tournament also held a food drive to help support three local area food pantries; the Bridgewater Food Pantry, Father Bill's and MainSpring House in Brockton and My Brother's Keeper in Easton.
