Trinity Wrestling Drops Pair Against Roger Williams And Wesleyan

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College Bantam wrestling team opened up the dual-match season with a pair of defeats in a home tri-match against the Roger Williams University Hawks and the Wesleyan University Cardinals this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity lost to the Hawks, 22-16, and to the Cardinals, 36-3, while Wesleyan downed Roger Williams in the first match of the day, 26-12.  Wesleyan, ranked No. 3 in New England, improves to 6-2-1 and improves its winning streak to six matches, while the Hawks, ranked No. 7 in the region, move to 3-7.

Trinity junior heavyweight Greg Vaughn (Hingham, Mass.) did not allow a single point in his two matches, winning, 2-0, against Hawk senior Bennett Kissane (Tranquility, N.J.) and, 4-0, over Wesleyan freshman Jacob Sheffer (New Lenox, Ill.).  The Bantams fell behind, 16-0, after the first four bouts against Roger Williams and suffered a forfeit loss at 125 pounds, but rallied to take the last four matches.  First-year 149-pounder John Williams (Winchester, Mass.) pinned his opponent in the final match of the contest in 4:38.  Roger Williams sophomore Phil Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) edged Bantam sophomore William Youngblood (Bernardsville, N.J.) at 197 pounds in what proved to be the deciding points of the match.

Five of Trinity's losses in the Wesleyan match were decided by a combined total of 11 points, two of which came during a 5-3 decision by Cardinal junior 165-pounder Tom Oddo (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) over Trinity senior captain Ben Speicher (Boston, Mass.) that included a two-point takedown by Oddo with 17 seconds left in the third period that gave Oddo the win and the Cardinals a 6-0 lead after two bouts.  Wesleyan won at three of the last four weight classes to break open a 10-9 match, beginning with a 14-3 triumph by senior Chris Alvanos (Feeding Hills, Mass.) over Jonathan Lemoine (Trumbull, Conn.) at 125 pounds.
