Youngblood Leads Trinity Wrestling Over RIC, Bantams Post Winning Duals Record
Providence, R.I. – Sophomore 184-pounder William Youngblood (Bernardsville, N.J.) won the final and deciding match by fall in a 22-19 victory against the Rhode Island College Anchormen and earned his team’s only win against the Bridgewater State University Bears in a 33-6 loss in a tri-match at Rhode Island College’s Murray Center this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 10 in New England, closes the dual-match season with an 8-7 mark, its first record over .500 since 2003-04. Bridgewater State, ranked No. 6 in New England, downed the Anchormen, 16-15, to sweep the day and improve to 10-8-1, while Rhode Island College, ranked No. 7 in New England, falls to 11-10.
Youngblood helped Trinity snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as the Bantams were down to their last match against Rhode Island College. With the Anchormen up, 19-16, and senior Chris Dean (Copiague, N.Y.) up, 4-3, at 184 lbs. for the home team, Youngblood scored a takedown and then was awarded the pin with just 16 seconds left in the final period to shock the Anchormen. Rhode Island College senior Brendan Guarino (Lodi, N.J.) had snapped a 16-16 tie between the clubs with a takedown in the final two seconds of his match at 174 lbs. to defeat Trinity sophomore Mason West (Northbrook, Ill.), 3-1, just prior to Youngblood’s heroics.
The Bantams took an early, 9-0, lead with a decision by freshman
197-pounder Petros Hologitas (Rockland, Mass.) and then a pin by
junior Greg Vaughan (Hingham, Mass.) at 285 lbs. The Anchormen
picked up a forfeit and a major decision by senior Travis Drappi
(West Orange, N.J.) to go up by one point, 10-9. Back-to-back
wins by the Anchormen built a 16-13 advantage with three matches to
go, but Trinity senior captain Ben Speicher’s (Boston, Mass.)
8-3 victory at 165 lbs. set the stage for the late contest
fireworks.
Bridgewater State won nine straight bouts en route to a 33-6
victory in Trinity’s second match. Youngblood prevented
the shutout by ending match with an injury default victory at 184
lbs.
