Springfield, Mass. - The Trinity College wrestling team dropped a pair of matches to Western New England University and the Unversity of Southern Maine on Sunday at a tri-meet, hosted by the Golden Bears. The Bantams return to action on Wednesday when they host American International and New England College at Oosting Gymnasium.
Trinity jumped out to a 7-6 lead against the Huskies thanks to consecutive wins by sophomores Ian Moritz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and captain Grant Sorensen (Moore, Okla.) after a forfeit at 125 pounds. Moritz earned a 16-8 major decision at 133 pounds whle Sorensen battled to a 9-3 decision at 141 pounds. Sophomore Nolan Cornu (Hopkinton, Mass.) won a 4-2 match at 165 pounds while classmate Joe Caggiano (Fair Lawn, N.J.) won, 8-4, at 197 pounds but the Bantams fell to the Huskies, 30-13.
Western New England clipped the Bantams, 21-18, in the second match of the day. Sorensen dominated at 141 pounds with a 7-0 win while fellow sophomore John Reilly (Andover, Mass.) worked a pin at 157 pounds for Trinity. Trailing, 15-9, first-year Stephen Cerrone (Quechee, Vt.) won, 9-4, at 174 pounds to trim the deficit to three. Caggiano pinned his opponent, 2:05, into the 184 pound match to give the Bantams their first lead of the match, however back-to-back wins by Western New England at 197 and 285 pounds gave the hosts a 21-18 victory.
