Trinity Wrestlers Fare Well In NEWA Futures Tournament

Providence, R.I. - Sophomores Matt Ferraro (Reading, Mass.) and Drew Saccone (Osterville, Mass.) each reached the semifinals of his weight class, as the Trinity College Bantams competed in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament this afternoon at Johnson and Wales University.  Both wrestlers finished 2-2 in the tournament.

Ferraro posted back-to-back wins by fall in the heavyweight division, but was pinned by eventual champion Adam Patsun, of Roger Williams, in the semifinals.  Ferraro fed into the consolation semifinals, but lost by fall against eventual third-place winner Nick Day, of Worcester Tech, who Ferraro had pinned in 1:39 in the opening round.

Saccone received a bye into the second round at 141 pounds, and won, 4-2, in his first match. He pinned his quarterfinal opponent in just 24 seconds to reach the semifinals, but was beaten by fall in 21 seconds by eventual champion D.J. Tirrell, of Johnson and Wales.  In his consolation bout, Sacoone dropped a 6-3 decision against eventual third-place winner Andrew Nirchio, of Springfield. Trinity sophomores Francis Corvino (Belmont, Mass.) and Mason Sangillo (Florham Park, N.J.) went 1-2 at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively.
