Trinity Wrestling Closes 2016-17 With NCAA Division III Regionals

Bristol, R.I. - Sophomore Ian Moritz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won by fall at 1:29 of his opening match to reach the quarterfinals of the 133-pound bracket, as the Trinity College Bantams finished 16th in NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships at Roger Williams University this afternoon.  Trinity totaled 13 points to finish 5.5 better than 17th-place Bridgewater State and 11 shy of Norwich in the 19-team field, while Johnson and Wales won the team title with 171.5 points.  The event concludes the 2016-17 season for the Bantams.

Moritz was the lone Bantam to win in a winner's bracket bout, downing Norwich's Jacob Forsman who was 24-14 entering the weekend.  Moritz lost on a decision, 10-5, to Jay Albis, of Johnson and Wales, who eventually won the 133-pound title, in the quarterfinals and fell to Wesleyan's Dylan Jones in the consolation bracket quarterfinals.

Trinity sophomore captain Grant Sorensen (Moore, Okla.) also had a successful tournament, winning two of four matches in the 141-pound division.  Coming back from a 12-1 setback against Ithaca's Nick Wahba in the opening round, Sorensen on, 5-4, in the consolation bracket first round and with a pin at 7:00 of the second round before finishing his day with a 12-4 loss in the consolation bracket's quarterfinal round.
