Trinity's Ferjanic Opens NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship Play Tomorrow
Hartford, Conn. - Trinity College first-year Melita Ferjanic (Samobor, Croatia) was one of 32 players selected to play in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championship Tournament on May 23-25 at Kalamazoo College. Ferjanic will open tournament play on Thursday, May 23 at Stowe Stadium against No. 6-seeded Sarah Woods, of Kalamazoo.
Ferjanic was 12-8 as Trinity's No. 1 singles player this fall, earned All-NESCAC First Team honors in singles, and was honored as the 2012-13 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Also 16-9 at first doubles with Bantam senior co-captain Hillary Hoyt (New York, N.Y.), Ferjanic and Hoyt were All-NESCAC Second Team honorees as a tandem. Ferjanic finished the regular season as the No. 6-ranked singles player in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region, while Ferjanic/Hoyt was also ranked No. 6 in the Northeast in doubles.
Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett (29th Season), were 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the NESCAC this spring and finished ranked No. 6 in the Northeast and No. 21 nationally as a squad. The Bantams qualified for the league championship tournament for the sixth time and the season in a row. The Bantams earned the No. 6 seed in the league tourney, falling to Bowdoin, 5-0, at Amherst in the NESCAC First Round.
